Greater efforts needed to check drug abuse:-
Every area in the city has a supply of drugs, be it certain ‘paan’ shops or individual peddlers. As this supply seeps into colleges, youngsters have become a majority in the group that falls prey to these illegal substances. In comparison to other cities, Hyderabad may not have been in the news much for drug abuse. But the underlying truth remains that our young guns form quite the percentage among addicts.
Dr Ramana from Asha De-addiction Centre says, “Most of our patients are aged 18-22. They begin by wanting to ‘try out’ drugs out of curiosity, peer pressure or rebellion. They are ignorant and don’t realise when they get addicted.” And what is startling isn’t just the relatively young age that some have begun at, but the sudden burst in activity recently. “About five years ago, drug abuse was hardly a problem in the city. Now, Hyderabad is probably the third highest amongst cities with drug issues,” opines Dr Bharath, who works at Phoenix Foundation, a rehabilitation centre.
