The pathway alongside the main water body at Sultanpur National Park, at one point, greets the visitor with the following message inscribed on a notice board — 'even the human spirit needs a place where nature has not been rearranged by the hand of man'. And yet, it's the 'hand of man' that has to all intents and purposes rearranged, though admittedly with the aim to restore, nature at this bird sanctuary over the past one year.
What was once a natural lake, feeding off the water flowing in from surface run-offs from as far as Manesar, is now an artificial one. Officials say that five cu-secs of water is pumped in from the Gurgaon Water Channel to keep things afloat here. On the lake's surface are mounds of a type of indigenous weed, placed by the forest officials as 'new resting points' for birds.
"This has made things much better, and this is the reason why we have already had more birds this season than we had last time," said a park official. The latest bird census, conducted here on November 23, reported 62 migratory species and around 160 domestic ones.
